Magnificent work on London. Of increasing value and interest for bringing back aspects of English life now for ever passed away. Especially interesting for the many literary and graphic delineations of the manners of the time, among the plates being those of the Pillory at Charing Cross, Bartholomew Fair, with Richardson's Show, the Prisons for Debtors, the Royal Cockpit, and other obsolete institutions. The combination of Rowlandson's humorous figures with Pugin's correct representations of the architecture has a peculiarly happy effect. "The collaboration of Rowlandson, Pugin, and Ackermann brought forth one of the best color plate books, The Microcosm of London. The aquatint color plates have background settings by August Charles Pugin (1762-1832) and figures added by Rowlandson. Pugin's precise architectural drawings are surprisingly strong for the lively energy of Rowlandson's figures." (Roylance. European Graphic Arts, Princeton University 1986). According to Abbey no. 212 this is an early issue in which only 2 of the 13 errata mentioned in vol. 3 have been corrected.

C.F. Hansen (1756-1845); dansk, klassicistisk arkitekt, kgl. hofbygmester, professor og direktør for Kunstakademiet. Han regnes for en af de væsentligste danske arkitekter, som satte sit præg ved at stå bag markante bygninger som Vor Frue Kirke, det andet (senere nedbrændte) Christiansborg hvoraf Slotskirken er bevaret, Metropolitanskolen og Domhuset, som oprindelig var tegnet til også at være rådhus, men som nu udfyldes af Københavns Byret. C.F. Hansen er endvidere arkitekten bag den i 1823 opførte Hørsholm Kirke i Nordsjælland samt Mariekirke i Husum i Sydslesvig og en mængde borgerhuse i Altona og Hamburg.
Christian Frederik var yngste søn, og der var ikke råd til at ofre synderligt på hans opdragelse, hvorfor han blev sat i handelslære; men hans uimodståelige lyst til tegning lod ham ikke i ro, og da moderen ved sin forbindelse med hoffet havde fået nogle indflydelsesrige personer til at interessere sig for ham, blev han anbragt i murerlære og samtidig på Kunstakademiet, hvor han vandt de to sølvmedaljer 1772 og 74, men ikke den lille guldmedalje. Da han i 1779 atter konkurrerede til denne, gjorde hans arbejde, "en Torvehal", så megen lykke, at man tilkendte ham den store guldmedalje derfor. C.F. Harsdorff var hans lærer på akademiet og følte så megen interesse for den flinke unge mand, at han optog ham i sit privatatelier og benyttede hans hjælp som bygningskonduktør, blandt andet ved Frederik 5.’s kapel i Roskilde Domkirke 1780. G.F. Hetsch der var C.F. Hansens svigersøn forsatte sammen med C. A. Reitzel udgivelsen af værket efter C.F. Hansens død, hvoraf 14 hefter allerede var udgivet af denne.
C.F.Hansen (1756-1845). Danish classicist architect, by Appointment builder to H.M.the King, professor and director of the Academy of fine Arts. He is considered to be one of the most significant Danish architects who left his stamp by being behind prominent buildings, such as Copenhagen Cathedral, the second (later burned down) Christiansborg, of which the chapel still exists. The Metropolitan School and the Law Courts, originally meant to be town hall, but today performs the functions of city court of Copenhagen.
Furthermore, C.F.Hansen is the architect behind the Church of Hørsholm, built in 1823 in North Zealand and Church of Mary in Husum in South Slesvig, as well as a number of city houses in Altona and Hamburg.
Christian Frederik was the youngest son and there were no means to spend on his education. Consequently, he was apprenticed to commerce. However, his irrisistible urge to draw did not leave him, and through his mother's connections to the Court some influential persons took an interest in him. He was apprenticed to a bricklayer and attended the Academy of Fine Arts at the same time, where he won the silver medal in 1772 and '74, but not the small golden medal. When in 1779 he entered into a competition for this, his work "A Market Hall" was so successful so that he was awarded the big golden medal. C.F.Harsdorff was his teacher at the Academy and took a personal interest in the nice young man. He admitted him in his private atelier and used him as a clerk of works, i.a. the chapel of Frederik V at Roskilde Cathedral in 1780. After his death, G.F.Hetsch, who was C.F.Hansen's son in law, continued the work together with C.A.Reitzel, who had already published 14 fascicles.

First edition. By the time the 4th vol. of this work appeared it had become the most substantial treatise of civil archicture by a German writer. Penther [1693-1749] was a practising architect and university lecturer, who was responsible for a number of innovative designs, including that of the Operahouse at Hanover (shown in pl.78-80 in vol. IV). Penther describes himself as "Königl. Grosbritannischen Rath" and clearly had connections with the Royal House of Hanover, since all four volumes of the present work are dedicated to Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. Despite the encyclopedic apperance of the present work, it consists only of the first four of eight intended volumes because Penther died before the end of 1749. But even in its incomplete form the work was very succesful and both a second and a third edition was later published, and many copies are made up of a mixture of all 3.
The 4th vol. is dated 1748 on the titlepage, but 24 June 1749 at the end of the dedication.

First edition of the translation and commentary by Claude Perrault, considered one of the scholarly editions of Vitruvius. This edition was commissioned by Colbert and remained the standard Vitruvius for more than two centuries. All illustrations are after Perrault's drawings, and were printed on the rolling presses installed on Colbert's order in the Bibliothèque Royale to produce impressions of the plates engraved for the Cabinet du Roi. They show caryatids, plans, elevations, sections and views of exemplary buildings, huts, brickwork, the proportions of the human body, the orders, &c. The new plates were engraved by G. Edelinck, E. Gantrel, J. Grignon, S. Le Clerc, J. Patigny, N. Pitau, G. Scotin, G. Tournier and P. Vander Blanck. Fowler 418. Catalogue of the British Architecttural Library, 3512.
