| It was based by Blaeu upon a map made by Joris Carolus, a Dutch traveler who probably drew his map in the 1620s. Carolus based his rendering on Iceland Bishop Gudbrandur Thorlaksson's map drawn originally in the late sixteenth century. Carolus updated his map and it remained the standard map of Iceland for much of the seventeenth century. Versions were issued by several publishers and this example, by Blaeu, is probably the most desirable of them all. |

Janssonius (1596-1664) er det andet store navn i katografiens historie i 1600-tallet. Siden sin tidligste ungdom havde han beskæftiget sig med at tegne kort og i 1633 blev han optaget i svogeren Hendrik Hondius' firma. | As mathematical and nautical instrument maker, Loots also published manuals on navigation. For a time he was in partnership with an engraver, A de Winter, and an author of text books on charts, Claes de Vries, who had ambitions to publish a very large sea atlas of some 200 charts but this was never completed on the scale contemplated. Some of their charts were sold to Gerard van Keulen and others were used in a sea atlas published in 1697. Charts by Loots also appear in a number of other pilot books and sea atlases of the time. |

Den engelske forlægger Moses Pitt (1654-96) planlagde udgivelsen af et atlas i 12 bind, men efter udgivelsen af 4. bind måtte han gå i gældsfængsel. Han havde truffet aftale med J. Janssonius' arvinger om at bruge deres plader, den eneste ændring han foretog var at indsætte et gradnet samt tilføje "Ex Officina Janssonio-Waesbergiana et Moses Pitt". |
