Magnificent work on London. Of increasing value and interest for bringing back aspects of English life now for ever passed away. Especially interesting for the many literary and graphic delineations of the manners of the time, among the plates being those of the Pillory at Charing Cross, Bartholomew Fair, with Richardson's Show, the Prisons for Debtors, the Royal Cockpit, and other obsolete institutions. The combination of Rowlandson's humorous figures with Pugin's correct representations of the architecture has a peculiarly happy effect. "The collaboration of Rowlandson, Pugin, and Ackermann brought forth one of the best color plate books, The Microcosm of London. The aquatint color plates have background settings by August Charles Pugin (1762-1832) and figures added by Rowlandson. Pugin's precise architectural drawings are surprisingly strong for the lively energy of Rowlandson's figures." (Roylance. European Graphic Arts, Princeton University 1986). According to Abbey no. 212 this is an early issue in which only 2 of the 13 errata mentioned in vol. 3 have been corrected.

1st German edit., printed in the same year as the original Dutch edition. This is the important and beautifully illustrated work by the Dutch reformed missionary Ph. Baldaeus (1632-1672), describing his travels along the East coasts of Malabar and Roromandel, and also of the isle of Ceylon, together with details of all the adjacent Kingdoms, principalities, provinces, cities, chief harbors, structures, Pagan temples and natural history. It details the manners, habits and religious ceremonies of the inhabitants as well as the war-like exploits, sieges, marine battles and field engagements between the Portuguese and Dutch. Many of these engravings, especially those of the Hindu gods, are truly exceptional in terms of composition and execution. Portuguese travellers first visited Sri lanka in 1505; they quickly gained control over the coastal areas of the island and remained as an occupying force until 1658, when the Portuguese were defeated by the Dutch forces who had begun the venture into the East Indies in search of spices and gold. Bell Coll. III, 69 referring to the Dutch edit. Landwehr, VOC 557.

First edition in Dutch. Sabin 25998. The first edition of the first voyage appeared in English in 1578, and was translated into several languages. All these editions are rare. Martin Frobisher was born around 1535 and died in 1594. He was one of the first English explorers to find and navigate the Northwest passage that led to the Orient. Frobisher was placed in command of an expedition to the New World in 1576, this was the first attempt by an Englishman to search for the Northwest Passage. Frobisher set sail on June 7, 1576, with three small ships named: the Gabriel, the Michael, and a Pinnace, unfortunately the Pinnace was sunk in a storm. Soon afterwards the Michael deserted and the Gabriel was left to sail onward alone. The Gabriel sighted the mouth of a bay, now that bay is known as Frobisher Bay, located on Baffin Island. Frobisher accidentally mistook this for the entrance to the Northwest Passage. This voyage and the following voyage were both unsuccessful in locating and establishing new colonies. Frobisher was a captain in action against the Spaniards from 1580-88. In 1585 He commanded the Primrose, as vice-admiral to Sir Francis Drake in his expedition to the West Indies. In 1591 he became a landed proprietor in Yorkshire and Notts. He found, however, little leisure from a country life and once again he sailed with Sir Walter Raleigh. After being wounded in battle, he died in Plymouth in 1594.

Originaludgaven. Lindroth III, 191-92. Beskriver bl.a. Malmö, Ängelholm, Christianstad og Kullen. First edition. "Linné's travels from the 18th century are among the most loved and read of his writings. The secret of Linné is his undisputed clarity in physical description. He gives a detailed general description of the villages of middle and southern Sweden in the times of the search for freedom. Everything is important: household and manufacture, antiquities, popular medicine, and the general customs of the country population. The anthropological descriptions of the 3 travelbooks are the real gems: housebuilding, dress, courting, weddings, maypoles, &c." Lindroth III, 191-92. Soulsby 210. Hulth 81.

A very beautiful DE-LUXE COPY of the first edition printed, on HEAVY PAPER. Bound in a Danish masterbinding in English style probably by George J. Liebe who settled 1774 as a bookbinder in Copenhagen and from 1746 he was appointed to the Danish Court. He introduced the rococostyle in the art of bookbinding in Denmark. The archaeological interested and artistic talented naval officer Fred. Ludv. Norden undertook in 1737 - 38 on Royal command and expense an archaelogical expedition to Egypt. He died, however, before the account of his travel was published, and the work was passed to the Danish Society of the Sciences. It became probably the most magnificent work in the history of Danish book production. The artist Marcus Tuscher was called in to engrave the many large illustrations after Norden's drawings of which a few are carried out by O. H. de Lode. Some of the beautiful initials are engraved by Jonas Haas, who has also engraved the large vignette above the preface drawn by J. M. Preisler together with vignettes drawn by Peter Cramer, who also engraved part of his own drawings. "Det hele Værk er af en sjælden fornem og virkelig pompøs Karakter." (Laur. Nielsen). The greatest 18th century Danish travel book. Famous for both its contents, and its printing and illustrations.
