| Anders Gries var kok i det kongelige køkken med titel af overdirektør. Bogtrykker Lars Salvius trykte mange af Linnés bøger, og man taler om den lykkelige tid da "Linné skrev, Salvius trykte, og Tessin betalte". Den store udfoldelige (45 x 59 cm) og meget charmerende planche er udført af Per Erici Geringius og blev senere anvendt i omarbejdet form i S.T. Schultzes klassike værk Den Swenska Fiskaren fra 1778. (Dal. Sv.Zoo.Litt). Et meget attraktivt eksemplar. Anders Gries was a cook in the royal kitchen. Bookprinter Lars Salvius printed many of Linné's books and a phrase turned up: "The fortunate time when Linné wrote, Salvius printed and Tessin paid". The large folded and very charming plate (45x59 cm) is done by Per Erici Geringius. A very nice and attractive copy. |

| Grolier/Horlbit 61. Norman 1257. Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736 - 1813), one of the notable French mathematicians of the Revolutionary period, is remembered for his work in the fields of analysis, number theory and mechanics. Like Laplace and Legendre, Lagrange was assisted by d'Alembert, and it was on the recommendation of the latter and the urging of Frederick the Great himself that Lagrange succeeded Euler as the director of mathematics at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. The Mécanique analytique which Lagrange had written in Berlin, was published in 1788. In this work, claimed to be the most important on classical mechanics since Newton, Lagrange developed the law of virtual work, from which single principle the whole of solid and fluid mechanics can be derived. The Mécanique analytique summarised all the work done in the field of mechanics since the time of Newton and is notable for its use of the theory of differential equations. With this work Lagrange transformed mechanics into a branch of mathematical analysis. He wrote in the Preface: 'One will not find figures in this work. The methods that I expound require neither constructions, nor geometrical or mechanical arguments, but only algebraic operations, subject to a regular and uniform course.' |

| The author is also known as the "Swedish Sowerby". The complete work should contain 774 handcoloured copperplates accompanied by 774 leaves of text. The last parts of the final volume were never published and a fire in the printing house destroyed the stock of the last published parts, which are consequently very rare (see the back of the index). Johan Wilhelm Palmstruch (1770-1811), an army officer, who had learned drawing from Desprez, made 455 coloured drawings of plants (now in the Academy of Sciences) and planned this magnificent work using as models Oeder's Flora Danica and Sowerby's English Botany. He started in collaboration with the engraver Carl Wilh. Venus (1770-1851) and the botanist Conrad Quensel (1767-1806) with financial support from the Academy of Sciences, which was responsible for publishing the work. The text was written by the most distinguished botanists of the period, Quensel, Olof Schwartz, Elias Friis, Göran Wahlenberg and Peter Fredrik Wahlberg. After Palmstruch's death the drawings were made by Gustaf Johan Billberg, Chancellor of the Exchequer and botanist, by Swartz, Lars Levi Laestadius, A. J. Agrelius, and P. F. Wahlberg. The work was esteemed by contemporaries as an enterprise of national importance. Palmstruch's own illustrations, in the six first volumes, have been characterized as the best pictures of plants ever produced in Sweden, and make this one of the most beautiful of Swedish books. | Zinner states that this work is printed in Nürenberg 1613 and asks for an appendix of 15 extra plates to vol. 2. It seems to be incorrect, and he has probably never seen the edition from 1613. The Royal Library in Copenhagen has two copies of this publication. One copy with printed date 1613 and printed by Balthazer Camox and one copy undated and printed by Paulus Fürst (c. 1605-1666), both consist of 15 copperplates in 4to, printed from the same plates - among them a world map. The copy from Samuels Verplank Hoffmann´s Library has the re-printed Paulus Fürst version, which then seems to be a second edition of Astrolabium, withbound. Lorentz Tuxen (1618-82), was a colourful political figure, he ran the estates of Queen Sophie Amalie, during the Swedish wars he tried to conquer Kronborg and kidnap the Swedish King, but was caught and fled to Copenhagen. Later he became inspector at Gisselfeld Estate and bought a house in Copenhagen, from where he conducted his business. Tabernaemontanus (1520/30-1590) was the last of the botanists of the 16th century, who attempted to produce an extensive book on herbs for the purposes of identification of the plants and their medical properties. His work is of major importance because of its systematic approach; there is a beginning of classifying the individual plants in families, so that Tabernaemontanus can be seen as an important precursor to Linné and as one of the fathers of the new botany. | Erik Viborg (1759-1822), veterinær og botaniker. Han var lektor ved Botanisk Have og vandt i 1788 Videnskabernes Selskabs pris for denne afhandling. I 1790 blev han inspektør over sandflugten. Senere fulgte en del rejser til mange europæiske lande, hvor han bl. a. indkøbte mange sjældne bøger til brug for veterinærvidekaberne. Bibl. Dan. II, 194. Viborg was a Danish veterinary and botanist. he was a lecturer at the Botanical Gardens and in 1788 he won the Royal Scientific Society's prize for this thesis. In 1790 he became inspector of the sand drift. Later he travelled to many european countries, where he bought many books for the use of the veterinary sciences. Due to intensive farming in Jutland, such as grassing, burning of heather, etc, there was sanddrift all over. The government appoints several commisions to deal with the problems. Erik Viborg writes one of the first books giving instructions to the locals on how to plant shrubs that will limite the sanddrift. |
